Guatemala is a beautiful country with rainforest, mountainous volcanoes, and thousands of species of wildlife . With a rich history from the Mayan Civilization, and eventual acquisition by the Spaniards in the 16th century, the culture of Guatemala has become very diverse with dozens of languages, customs, and belief systems. Guatemala has a population of about 18 million and there is widespread disparity between those who live in the busy cities where the basic necessities of life can be found, and those who live simpler lives in the poor and very poor rural areas where indigenous people make $1 to $2 per day. Agua Viva works in these rural areas where no access to clean drinking water is available.
