Agua Viva means “Living Water” in English. Our water purification systems and our health and hygiene education programs are the heart of our efforts. Agua Viva has installed over 51 water purification systems and health and hygiene education programs in 5 different counties: Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya and Tanzania.
The average cost for the eight installations completed in 2024, including the water purification system and health and hygiene education program, was $20,500 USD per installation. The design provides for a very efficient, low maintenance, and low operation cost system for a community of 2,000 – 5,000 people.

2021 Projects
We started 2021 with the COVID pandemic still impacting foreign travel by our board members and volunteers. In the fall of 2020, the Agua Viva leadership group asked the question – how are we going to successfully fulfill our mission of providing purified water to communities in need with the travel restrictions? Our solution was to ask our in-country friends that had been traveling with us for years; providing interpretation/translating, logistics and transportation services, if they thought they could build the water purification system and provide the health and hygiene education program and manage these projects without our on-site presence. We received a 100 percent response that YES, they could do this and they also responded that they felt EMPOWERED by our confidence in them to lead our program within their respective countries. The next challenge we faced was how to get the materials to them. The typical installation at that time received 8 fully packed, 50-pound suitcases transported by our volunteers. Our solution was to pack our suitcases as typical, then load them into reinforced modified liquid container crates and have them shipped by boat to our in-country teams. In January Agua Viva shipped three installation and education materials to Africa, two to Honduras and one to Ecuador. By March, each of the in-country teams had received their materials, but not without issues getting materials through customs (lessons learned!). As travel restrictions lessened during 2021, by fall, Agua Viva was able to travel to Ecuador, Guatemala and Honduras, two board members per country, not only to deliver materials for additional 2021 installations but to assist the in-country teams with qualification and stewardship visits.
The newly formed Agua Viva in-country teams were able to complete 9 water purification systems and health and hygiene education programs in 2021. In addition to these installations, our teams were involved with 15 Qualification projects, finding the next communities to partner with for a new water purification system and 12 Stewardship visits making sure existing systems continue to be operated effectively and efficiently and the health and hygiene education programs are on-going in the community.
