In Ecuador, Agua Viva works primarily with the Quechua, an indigenous population living in the Andean highlands. Rural areas are largely forgotten and lack government support. Because of extreme poverty and the mountainous locations, other water organizations do not work in these areas. The Quechua value community, and major decisions such as installing a purified water system are voted on in a “minga” — a community gathering.
