Kisii, Kenya
Water Room Dedication and Celebration
PN 22-037
The following project detail was provided by our Africa in-country coordinator, Mbaja Wagome, who led an all in-country team for this installation and health and hygiene education program.
Kisii special school is one of the unique schools in Kenya. Its uniqueness can only be noticed immediately when one reaches the school gate and gets greeted with sounds similar to that of baboons in the wilderness. However, one should not confuse this place with a small zoo. It is a place where the children of God who are mentally retarded are kept and trained in order to cope with their situations and environment.
In 2023, the Agua Viva in-country coordinator visited the school while in the investigation tour to Kenya from Uganda. I was highly attracted when I came across these people, and just on the spot, the covenant was signed with the hope that the installation of a water purification system would be done immediately. This would help this group, who are forgotten, to get clean and purified water for drinking.

The year 2024 was a blessing year for the learners in this school. Despite the fact that learners in this school are mentally retarded, they were also suffering from various waterborne diseases such as typhoid, and to some given point cholera during the pandemic. Some of them could end up in death!! Surprisingly, nobody cared about them except their God and now Agua Viva.
With the installation of a water purification system in 2024, hope and love were brought to Kisii Special School among the teachers and learners. Everybody within campus was enthusiastic about the project. The project brought hope to the abandoned, love to the hated and disregarded.
Teachers began drinking water immediately after the installation was completed. Everybody was talking of the sweetness of this water. They called it, the life water. Members of the community thronged the gate to see the project. Life is changing for the forgotten lots. Nobody could believe their eyes because many Organizations had come to establish projects to help the learners here but none had ever materialized. Agua Viva International did it!!
Health and hygiene education was also loved in equal measures. Though, it was a holiday and teachers and learners were at home, they all come back to school in number to learn about hygiene and health.
As an in-country team our aim and objective is to help eradicate waterborne diseases and ensure that thousands of death through waterborne diseases is eliminated. Members of our communities are trained in handwashing, and other basic healthcare to avoid getting sick due to diseases which can be prevented.
