With a population of about 9 million, the clear majority of wealth in Honduras is concentrated in the urban centers. This wonderful country is rich in natural resources like minerals, coffee, tropical fruit, and sugar cane. Unfortunately, the country has been recently plagued by political instability with a coup in 2009, and a contested presidential election in 2017. As the cities of Honduras struggle with one of the world’s highest murder rates and very high levels of sexual violence, the rural areas need dedicated Agua Viva volunteers all the more. Having a source of clean drinking water is an unimaginable gift to these poor areas.
