San Alfonso de Tiocajas, Ecuador
Water Room Dedication and Celebration
PN 19-022
Agua Viva was introduced to the Batalla de Tiocajas community by Andreina Logrono from the Guamote Water District. In previous discussions we had asked her to rank the communities in her district as to sickness and the need for water purification. This was one of three communities we visited in September, 2019. While waiting for the community meeting, Curt Mader (one of our founders), assembled and connected a weather station to their computer, a gift by others to their school with the instructions in English! This is an example of our make friends first motto. The school has 120 students with a community population of 500. Animal husbandry and crop production are the income sources for the community. Mario Akhras, our in-country coordinator, did the WIS in a site visit November, 2022. Our third visit to the community with US volunteers was in October, 2023 for signing the covenant to provide the water purification system and health and hygiene education program. The installation and education program was completed by our in-country team led by Mario.
