The Balanya English Academy is a private school founded in 2016 that recently relocated from Chimaltenango to their current site in Balanya, on property the school purchased and is building their campus. Currently they have 60 students in pre-school, primary and middle school and plan to have high school in the near future. The school, while private, is free to the students. The goal of the Academy is to teach English to the students that will provide for more opportunities in a global environment/economy. Their three principles are Education, Health and Family. The Balanya community has 4500 people with 1500 people living within 1 KM of the school. In addition to education, the school gives back to the community by building houses for their student’s families (12); building stoves with chimneys for families that cannot afford stoves; and partnering with a non-profit that provides dental care to the students and the community. Family income comes from working the land, either on their own small plots selling or bartering their crops or on company land for wages.
